Il est actuellement 23H45 ce Dimanche 10 Mai 2020. Depuis 20H environs, je travaillais sur la page pricing de mes services de maintenance WordPress. Je viens de terminer, et je suis super content.

C’était important pour moi d’avoir une page pricing pour mes services. J’ai donc décidé de commencer par celle des services de maintenance.

Alors, la page est créée en full Gutenberg. C’était vrraiment super cool. De pouvoir m’amuser à nouveau avec les blocs de Gut.

Alez bye. Je suis aussi hyper fatigué. Go dodo!

Feeling again the pleasure of learning something new

When I discovered WordPress a few years ago, I was really excited to learn some new stuff. I liked it, and I was happy.

I‘ve learned a lot of great stuff since then. Really interesting things. But as the years went by, I had lost the pleasure I felt when I discovered something new.

I was learning, but I wasn’t happy about it. I stagnated, and tried to run away from the reasons for it.

Today, a little by chance, I found myself on the GatsbyJS website. So I read the first documentations, and… I found it really fantastic.

Even though I hadn’t planned this initially, I found myself reading more and more about it.

I felt this outpouring of joy again when I learned that I had four years ago.

Now, it’s great to say again

I’m learning GatsbyJS, and I’m happy to do it.

Going live (again) tomorrow

So my first live coding experience was pretty cool. I even got to upload it to YouTube. So I decided to do it again.

Tomorrow, I start the first of a series about WordPress theme development. Of course I’m super excited about it. But I’m a bit apprehensive too.

I’m going to try to make the sessions not too long. Try because when I’m faced with my code, well …

The struggles of going live

Disclaimer: this note has nothing to do with the one I made a few days ago titled « Going live« . Here, I rather want to talk about the challenges I encountered while testing setups to do live coding sessions.

I admire people who manage to code live. I think it’s something that requires both technical skills and a lot of self-control.

Because anything can happen during a live session. The connection can fuck up, the camera can fuck up, the mic can fuck up … ??. In short, anything can go wrong.

I started this week to do some tests of a live broadcast from my computer. Hardware side, perfect. Connection, average. The big snag is the setup of Streamlabs, the software I plan to use to stream my video feed.

It’s the first time I’m programming a live coding session, so I’m going to say that I’m having a bit of a hard time. But I’m gradually getting used to it. And I think everything will be fine when the time comes.

Renewing with contribution to Core

Since the WordPress 5.3 release, during which I was in charge of the technical documentation, I’ve moved a bit away from contributing to WordPress Core.

For several reasons, some of them personal. I couldn’t keep up with the contribution, my job, and my personal projects. Honestly, it was weird for me, because I spent the last six months before the 5.3 release contributing regularly and continuously.

Now, I’ve more or less harmonized things. And now I can spend time again to contribute. I started again yesterday with the release day of WordPress 5.4. And today with the weekly devchat.

So that’s it.

J’avais déjà une fois été invité sur un podcast WordPress en fin d’année 2019. En Février dernier, j’ai eu le plaisir d’intervenir dans un autre podcast. Celui de Christina Workman, wp_contribute.

Christina interviewe des personnes qui contribuent à WordPress. Elle en est à son 7ème épisode actuellement; et les interviews précédents sont vraiment intéressants.

On a échangé pendant plus d’une heure sur mes débuts dans la contribution WordPress, les conseils à suivre par les nouveaux contributeurs, et bien sûr mon Wapuu préféré ?.

Utiliser Gutenberg à un niveau supérieur

Quand Matt Mullenweg annonçait la feuille de route du projet Gutenberg en 2018, très peu savaient que le projet prendrait une telle ampleur. Aujourd’hui, l’éditeur est devenu plus qu’un éditeur; et il est de plus en plus possible de l’utiliser à un nouveau supérieur.

J’ai connu WordPress à l’époque où les constructeurs de pages étaient déjà très populaires, et largement utilisés. Mais avec l’arrivée de Gutenberg, j’espère vivement que c’est quelque chose qui va changer.

C’est maintenant possible de construire des pages web complètes et avec des structures très avancées rien qu’avec le nouvel éditeur. Il suffit juste d’essayer.

Et il y a de plus en plus de thèmes WordPress qui proposent un support total de Gutenberg. De nombreuses extensions offrent aussi des blocs très avancés qu’on ne retrouvait que dans les constructeurs de page.

C’est très excitant de voir l’ampleur que prend ce projet, et comment il va révolutionner WordPress tel que nous l’avons toujours connu.

The future of WordPress

I’m writing here a Twitter thread that I’ve made at the end of last year.

I strongly believe that the future of WordPress as a tool to power the web lies in specialization. A high and very precise specialization.

The trend for WordPress themes now, for instance, is multipurpose. We think that’s what users/customers are looking for, but IMO, it is not true. It is what they « think » they are looking for. Rather, there should be a movement for more and more specific themes, oriented towards very specific needs, accompanied by a dedicated support service.

The same is true for platforms based on WordPress. In my opinion, this is where the future of the CMS is.

An event management platform powered by WordPress, or a ticket reservation platform, a call for applications management platform, etc….

And when I say platform, I don’t mean a theme associated with plugins, but really a platform designed for specific needs.

Decisions, not options

L’une des philosophies du projet WordPresss est « Decisions, not options ». En gros, cela consiste à limiter au strict minimum le nombre de choix qu’un utilisateur aura à faire en utilisant le logiciel.

C’est une approche plutôt intéressante; et qui a permis jusque ici à WordPress (Core) d’être aussi complet, en ne devenant pas une usine à gaz.

C’est aussi (peut-être) l’une des raisons qui explique l’importance de l’écosystème de plugins autour du CMS.
